Ivins Utah

Ivins Utah is nestled under the "Big Red Mountain" 3 miles northwest of St. George on the Santa Clara Bench. This is a fast growing community, with continual home construction. The population of Ivins is approximately 4,450 (2000 Census Data). There are very few small farms in Ivins, mostly for horse and cattle feed. Ivins is nestled at the mouth of Snow Canyon State Park. One of the canyon walls houses Tuachan Amphitheater. There are panoramic views all around town, because it is higher than St. George. You can see the lights of St. George at night, yet it is far enough away that you get a magnificent night sky. If you watch shooting stars you can usually see one or more. People drive out during meteor showers to get a good view of the light show.
The red mountains to the north are over 1000 feet above the city, with vermillion cliffs that run for a few miles; and the contrast of old lava flows along with the white cliffs of Snow Canyon. Snow Canyons' southern entrance is in Ivins, which adds more contrast because of the canyons beige, red and orange walls.
History
The town of Ivins began as a result of an eight mile canal that was built from the Santa Clara creek near the Shem smelter to the bench. Civil Engineers, Leo A. Snow and Clarence S. Jarvis conceived the idea in 1909. Work began in 1911 nad the canal was completed in 1914. In 1918 the Ivins reservios wan built in 1918 to store the water.
The first couple to move to the area were Mr. and Mrs. Alden Gray on january 15, 1922. Ten more couples arrived by the end of 1924. Hard work and a willingness to live in such humble circumstances made this new town a reality. The children travelled to school to Santa Clara each day by horse.
The town name was changed from being called "Santa Clara Bench" to Ivins in honor of Anthony W. Ivins.
